Opis

This edited volume was originally published in 2000 and presents a comprehensive, interdisciplinary review of issues related to inland flood hazards. It addresses physical controls on flooding, flood processes and effects, and responses to flooding, from the perspective of human, aquatic, and riparian communities. Individual chapter authors are recognized experts in their fields who draw on examples and case studies of inland flood hazards from around the world. This volume is unusual among treatments of flood hazards in that it addresses how the non-occurrence of floods, in association with flow regulation and other human manipulation of river systems, may create hazards for aquatic and riparian communities. This book will be a valuable resource for everyone associated with inland flood hazards: professionals in government and industry, and researchers and graduate students in civil engineering, geography, geology, hydrology, hydraulics, and ecology. Review of the hardback: '... this book provides a welcome, fresh outlook. It is well illustrated with diagrams and black-and-white photographs. Each chapter lists references and there is an index. ... Can be recommended as an up-to-date account that should establish itself as a useful volume for students in a wide range of field science disciplines.' Keith Smith Geography and Environmental Science Review of the hardback: '... comes with unreserved recommendation as a comprehensive work that nonetheless loses little in depth.' The Geographical Journal Review of the hardback: '... a well-constructed book with a non-traditional inclusion of flood processes and implications. There is much to like about this kind of approach, and just about any reader, no matter what their background or interest in floods, will find something of interest and importance in here.' Earth Surface Processes and LandformsPart I. Introduction: 1. Inland flood hazards Ellen E. Wohl; Part II. Physical Controls on Flooding: 2. Hydroclimatology of meteorologic floods K. K. Hirschboeck et al.; 3. Floods from natural and artificial dam failures Daniel A. Cenderelli; 4. Anthropogenic impacts on flood hazards Ellen E. Wohl; Part III. Flood Processes and Effects: 5.
