Opis

The Oxford Handbook of Offshoring and Global Employment deals with a key issue of our time - How do globalization, economic growth and technological developments interact to impact employment? The book brings together eminent authors from a wide range of countries around the world, drawing on their diverse academic and policymaking backgrounds, and specific national or regional settings to assess how global economic changes have affected employment opportunities. The book is unique in a number of ways - It has a global reach, presenting analyses and viewpoints from both developed and developing countries, from all continents; its timing and context is particularly instructive, since most papers are located in the aftermath of the global financial crisis; and it addresses a wide range of questions-How do different types of offshoring and global linkages impact employment? How is the skill mix of the labor force impacted by globalization? How do institutional structures and regulations influence the outcome of globalization in developed and developing countries? Individual chapters analyze how the impact of global linkages on national economies is mediated through a number of structural aspects of the economy - its institutional and industrial structure, its resource base, its predominant firm type, its comparative advantage, and its regulatory practices. The chapters in the book cover both manufacturing and services sectors, and many chapters also address policy issues regarding innovation and job creation.
"This volume is a comprehensive treatment of offshoring, covering the trade of goods and services across many regions of the world with both conceptual insights and abundant country evidence. Experts and students alike will be rewarded by a careful study of this valuable handbook."--Robert C. Feenstra, C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Chair in International Economics, University of California, Davis

"These two dozen essays, written by leading experts in the field, provide a thorough and definitive overview of how offshoring and global employment are related in both developed and developing regions. It provides a both comprehensive and authoritative analysis of the potent drivers of global economic activities and their consequences. This is an invaluable book for both the layperson and the academic who want to learn more about globalization."--Clair Brown, Professor of Economics and Director, Center for Work, Technology, and Society, University of California, Berkeley

"Everything you want to know about offshoring--and more. With chapters on 20 countries and the EU in its entirety and using many different data sets and analytic techniques, this book is an education in how modern global economies function and interact as seen through the lens of offshoring and labor. Whether you are an expert or novice in the economics of offshoring, trade, labor, or development, you will learn a lot about what economics knows and needs to know about this important aspect of globalization. Guaranteed by the Invisible Hand."--Richard Freeman, Herbert Ascherman Professor of Economics, Harvard University

"I commend the volume editors for their vision across countries, sectors, and methodologies. It is truly a global approach to understanding globalization. The breadth of coverage by country, sector, and perspective is remarkable. At a minimum, breaking away from the United States-centric studies to a wide range of developed, emerging, and developing economies is an accACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ; EDITOR'S NOTE ; SECTION IA: GLOBALIZATION AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD ; 1 OFFSHORING AND EMPLOYMENT: A GLOBAL LOOK AT A GLOBAL ISSUE ; ASHOK BARDHAN, DWIGHT JAFFEE, AND CYNTHIA A.
