On December 14, 2012, a psychopath fatally shot twenty three children and six adults in school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. While driving home that afternoon, I heard the horrible news over the radio. I was horrified and astonished at the number of children and faculty killed. I pulled my car to the side of the road and began to cry. Having a daughter and son in school and a wife that teaches fourth grade, I just couldn't imagine anything happening to them. As the days went by, I pondered why our schools are not more secure. I realized that banks, corporations, and even pawn shops all have better security than schools.
I believe towns can implement low cost initiatives that will improve school safety and security. Let's face it, the world is changing at a fast pace. Keeping our school children safe throughout the school day requires a whole new plan with specific objectives that our yesterdays could never have imagined. Now is the time for change.
