Excerpt from After: A Novel<br><br>High up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the land lies with no urban pall between itself and God a semi-circle of azure-capped hills looked down, and caught the sight of David Duncan as he climbed steadily down the ladder from the newly shingled roof of his dwelling - and print shop. He carried the ladder around to the back of the building, returned to the front and looked up at the clean roof, and went into the print shop through a door that was wide; he stepped out again, in a moment, took another look at his roof, and then crossed to the railroad track, and strolled along the path by the shining rails. They would soon shine no longer, for it was nearly sundown. Mr. Duncan was preoccupied.
