Opis
Excerpt from Cheers

"Stephen on those days when there was rain, and I was working with my papa in his fields, to me the sun would come out and lake away the darkness from over our village," papa's voice now comes back to me. Today after much rain, the village is still dark, but to me, over the little house which papa had built for us with his very own hands, there seems to be no darkness. No, there will never be any darkness.

Once I had said that I will leave my past behind me, by walking over hills and through villages for the rest of my days. That is what I am doing now. I mean walking out of my village, but I am not sure about just how far I will reach, because so many things have come about since I made that vow to myself, yes, so many things.

Now as I continue on my walk, I am beginning to think about

what started it all........Was it that time when I ran away from

the school house for the third time and never went back Or maybe it was that time when there was the drought and all our cattle had died because the wells, rivers and streams had dried up. Then to add to it all, our barn was burnt down. That day I went to the hill I claimed mine and sat down. And there before me as I looked down. I saw men working, toiling under the broiling sun. To me it appeared that my papa and the other men were wasting their labour. Then I began to imagine that we were leaving our village, yes, everybody was, but then 1 discarded the thought because I knew that my papa and the other men were never going to leave what their forefathers had prepared for them. But then, soon the rains came and the wells, rivers and streams were filled once again and everybody was happy. There was merriment and even me too, was happy.

Then in the middle of the feast which was being offered because the good Lord had showered the village with rain once again, my papa took me in his arms and said: "Stephen the time is near when I must kiss this land goodbye, then it will be all yours, so conic to the fields and help me to till the soil, so that you will get the feel of holding your very own soil through your fingers." There was an applause from the gathering and I was too choked to say anything.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
