The object of this book, rather than being concerned with the military detail, has been to sought to focus on the diplomatic aspect of the Anglo-French relations: to analyze the causes which undermined the stability of the Treaty of Blois, on which our foreign policy rested from 1572, and to explain how the way was prepared for the "reversal" of Elizabeths statecraft by James VI. and I. The essay is mainly based on state papers and instructions to Ambassadors, which are available from the Records Office, London, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
