A year or two afterwards, the entire stock of the book of which they formed part was destroyed by fire in the premises of Messrs. Kegan Paul & Co. It has since been out of print. The substance of the first two essays - on "Idealism and Experience, in Literature, Art, and Life," and on "The Classification of the Sciences" - was embodied in a course of lectures delivered last summer to the Royal Institution of Great Britain.
