Broken health, though mended, usually carries a scar. We are not quite what we were, after a serious illness. From overwork or unwise living the nerve force breaks down and vital organs are weakened; then follows enforced rest, heavy expense, and a life-long struggle with a broken constitution.<br><br>It is reported that a man of wealth has offered a million dollars for a new stomach. It can not be supplied, even at that price. If it were possible, it would be poor economy for the man to spoil a good stomach by bad living, and then pay such a price for a new one.<br><br>A lecturer, pale and thin, was urging upon a convention the importance of certain dietetic reforms. A doubting listener, who thought the speaker a poor representative of his theory, asked him how the reform he was advocating agreed with his constitution. "My constitution!" replied the witty speaker, "I haven't any constitution. I have been living on my by-laws for thirty years."<br><br>The great majority of physicians and graduated nurses are working night and day framing by-laws for broken constitutions, when a portion of their time, at least, might better be spent in teaching the people how to escape disease by earing for their bodies and their homes in harmony with the laws of health. We are told that certain heathen races pay their physicians by the month for keeping them well. When sickness comes, the pay stops.
