Excerpt from Mathematical Drawing<br><br>In every branch of Mathematics we are presented with solutions of problems expressed in the form of equations from which some unknown quantity is to be found; and in many cases the mathematician is content to regard the equation as the complete solution of the problem without obtaining from it the actual value of the quantity sought. If, however, the problem is a physical one, we cannot be content to leave the unknown quantity buried in an equation. Sometimes the equation is one which falls under well-known algebraic rules and admits of a solution by standard methods; but in most cases, of course, physical equations do not assume the forms discussed in treatises on Algebra and Theory of Equations.<br><br>A considerable portion of this work is devoted to the discussion of such equations and the means by which they can be solved graphically.<br><br>An exposition of the methods to be employed in a large number of somewhat typical cases will assist the student to invent graphic methods for himself when he meets some equation which does not come precisely under any of the forms here discussed. A little practice is all that is necessary, and it is hoped that the examples contained in this book will prove to be an adequate guide.<br><br>This branch of our subject, although obviously of practical importance, is not very well known, or, so far as we are aware, systematically taught in schools or colleges.<br><br>The reader will, of course, bear in mind that, as the subject of the work is Drawing, a good deal of mathematical theory is assumed as within the knowledge of the student.<br><br>About the Publisher<br><br>Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
