Mimi's Marriage" originally appeared under the title of "Mimotchka" in February, 1891, in the Vestnik Europy, one of the leading Russian magazines, and was afterwards published as a separate book in 1892. It was signed, "V. M. Mikoulitch" (a pseudonym), and excited a good deal of attention, both from the liveliness of the style and from the fact of its being quite a new departure in Russian literature. All the press commented very favourably on "Mimi's Marriage," and Count Tolstoi himself was pleased to admire the work, but expressed the opinion that "the author must be a man, as no woman would be so frank in writing of her own sex."
