Excerpt from Modern Europe, 1815-1899, Vol. 8<br><br>In any attempt to deal in a small space with a vast subject it is clear that a bold use must be made of the art of arts - that of leaving out; and by the skill with which this art is exhibited in it the quality of a historical work, as of a painting, may be largely determined.<br><br>In writing the following pages I have tried to keep this truth constantly before me; with what success I must leave to the kindly judgment of my readers. For the guidance of this judgment, however, it would perhaps be well to state briefly the principles of omission and inclusion on which I have proceeded.<br><br>In general-I have preferred to risk the charge of leaving out much that is essential rather than, by undue compression, to crowd my canvas with a mere lifeless diagram of facts.
