This book is a monograph of traditional Serbian birth presented as a ritual- and custom-oriented complex, the analysis of which is grounded in verbal folklore both accompanying and unconnected with the rite itself. The key for the established mode of research is the treatment of ritual- and custom-oriented complex of traditional Serbian birth as an abstract model Max Weber, that was formed on the basis of Arnold van Gennep's Rite of Passage Theory. Owing to the above treatment it was possible to discover the internal system of traditional Serbian birth understood as a rite of passage that is inseparably connected with the wedding rite and with the verbal folklore, its indivisible and explanatory component.
