Excerpt from Plays<br><br>Bjrnstjerne Bjrnson was born December 8, 1832, in a solitary rectory, lost among the mountains of northern Norway. His father was then the spiritual head of the smallest parish in the whole country. There the boy spent the first years of his life, seeing more of nature than of man. When he was six the family removed to the Romsdal district, on the Atlantic coast, which is one of the most beautiful and also most characteristic parts of Norway. In 1843 the boy was sent to school in the little fishing-town of Molde, not far from his parental home, and at eighteen he went to Christiania to study at the same school where the young Ibsen was then preparing himself for entrance into the national university.<br><br>He was only twenty when he wrote his first play - historical, of course, with a theme from the Sagas. It was accepted by the Christiania Theatre, but before it reached a performance the young author realised its shortcomings and withdrew it. His public career began as dramatic critic on a daily newspaper, and in this capacity he made history by leading the opposition against the Danish influence, which had until then prevailed on the national stage.
