Sailor's Soup was a kind of vegetable soup served on the SS Waterman, on the way from the island of Biak, New Guinea to a foggy Rotterdam. One of the passengers was little Willie for whom the crossing was not only interesting, but proved traumatic later. The same can be said for other occupants and other "repatriating" Indos or Dutch- Indonesians. It's just what you call them. In these stories, Indos and Other Types are in the limelight, looking for sense and consistency.
Chris Soebroto was born in Indonesia. As a very tiny baby boomer, after enjoying his Mom's milk, he began to discover the world, feasting on fried soybean cake and sweet soy sauce. Yet, he spent most of his life in the Netherlands, at the other side of the world.
There, in the Low Countries with its meandering rivers, dunes and dikes, he embarked on an equally meandering career that included the travel business, cultural anthropology, development cooperation, environmental sustainability and writing books.
It had been a long time coming: in first grade, after mastering the alphabet, he had realized: now I can write anything!
