The fleecy covering<br>Which water-sprites with magic fingers nightly weave,<br>Moves lightly on the gently throbbing waves, as moves<br>The drapery o'er the sleeping form of one we love.<br>The birds within the arbor-vitae groves begin,<br>In piping notes, to tell the near approach of day.<br>The breezes bring sweet odors from the pine-clad rocks<br>And fling the fragrant incense o'er the quiet lake.<br>Phoebus, with laughing eye, looks on the drowsy East,<br>Which straightway blushes as a maiden innocent,<br>And, smiling, leaves her couch to greet the coming god.<br>The fort upon the hill as yet shows naught of life,<br>Its white walls looming up like specters of the past,<br>Hoary with history, and strong yet beautiful.<br>The boats at anchor in the bay are touched with light.<br>Bois Blanc appears; its forest in the distance seems<br>A bold, deep graven line, made by a master's hand.<br>Above, with lighter touch, Aurora paints the clouds,<br>While earth and vapor, lake and sky unite<br>To form this charming, changing, ever-brightening scene.<br>And now, the far-off light that flashed throughout the night<br>To guide the mariner, goes out.
