A handful of notes represents many years of preaching. The sermon has to me never been an end in itself, only a channel of blessing. And it is only in answer to the entreaty of a host of friends in many lands that I have arranged the sermons for this volume. The vividness and sudden sweep of thought may be missed by some. But that is the attendant of extempore preaching which has been my custom mainly for thirty years.
