Excerpt from The Adventures of Mr. Ledbury and His Friend Jack Johnson<br><br>The system of writing a talc in periodical divisions, wherein one situation must follow upon the heels of another with high-pressure rapidity - in which constant change is looked for, and no repose allowed between the prominent incidents of the narrative - is not the best calculated to form a three-volume novel. And therefore the Author has made some slight alterations in this story, from its original form in "Bentley's Miscellany," in order that the structure might be better adapted for republication.<br><br>He has endeavoured, in Mr. Ledbury's Adventures, to sketch the manners of certain classes of society, as they actually are - not as they are conventionally represented to be; and as they are taken from nature, not individually, but generally, he hopes they will be considered, at least, faithful.
