It is not attempted in this book to exhaust the subject of English Grammar. The aim is to grasp the essential principles of the subject, to illustrate these clearly and fully, and to furnish the learner an abundant supply of examples, by which he may cultivate his own skill, in discerning and pointing out these principles in parsing and analyzing.<br><br>The practice here contemplated and provided for, will make the learner so familiar with all the essential features of the English language as to secure its correct use, and be the best possible safeguard against error; and will lay a good foundation for the critical study of this or any other language.<br><br>Those who would understand how the author has accomplished this object, are invited to read carefully the Introduction, in which his method is briefly set forth, and then examine in detail the progress of the book. The arrangement adopted to furnish an easy progress to the learner is such, that a glance here and there at disconnected portions will give an erroneous idea of the character of the work.
