The most effective mode is to remove its causes, which often have their origin in our social condition, and more often in the absence or weakening of those moral restraints by means of which society is kept together. But when this mode fails, or when we omit, from want of knowledge or other cause, to apply it, we are obliged, for the protection of the community, to resort to such methods of curing it as may prove most effectual.
