I have incorporated portions of two papers previously published, namely, "The Province of Sociology," which appeared in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Vol. I, No. I, July, 1890, and "Sociology as a University Study," which appeared in The Political Science Quarterly, Vol. VI, No. 4, December, 1891.
