There would be no propriety in this use of a private communication if there were not good evidence that the same question here proposed is working, earnestly and anxiously, in many other minds all around us. The religious history of this part of the country would have brought it up, sooner or later, even if there were not still more general tendencies operating in modern society, investigation, and criticism, to occasion it. In religious opinion, action and reaction follow each other by laws of the mind, much as they do in the physical kingdoms by laws of matter. The great truths, both natural and revealed, stand fast. The primitive creed, drawn directly from the Gospel, outlasts all the currents and counter-currents of human interpretation, like the rock where seas meet.
